Hello again,

I don't know about you people, but Blocks has been just a hell of a ride for me. A ride which crashed and burned.

And I died.

And I'm probably not gonna rise again.

Ever.

Because I just feel so damn disappointed with myself =/

This is probably the beginning of the end. Sigh... :(

OK, and now for the TIP OF THE WEEK!

Have you ever had problems waking up? It has always been a problem for me since high school, and most of the time, I just sleep on the bus and the bus will overshoot my intended bus-stop. Well, sleeping on the bus doesn't happen to me now. I turn on my handphone alarm clock whenever I sleep on the bus =X heh...it works!

But sleeping in my bedroom is a different story. The alarm clock in my handphone is not loud enough. So...here's an idea that might just work for heavy sleepers like me. Enjoy :)

How to argue effectively

OK, now for the TIP OF THE WEEK!

This is from an article written by Dave Barry quite long ago. It's titled "How to argue effectively", which I have found to be an interesting input to the realm of skillful debating. Well, for me, I don't like confrontations :(, because most of the time, I know I'm wrong in the end some way or another. I always try to hold back my views, because I know they are probably flawed. Such is my sad sad life =/.

BUT anyway, if you would love to:

Appear to be an expert on the subject of argument
Be intimidating in your arguments
Display your ignorance and yet still appear credible

Then you'll find this article extremely useful. Haha :D Here goes:

-START-

I argue very well. Ask any of my remaining friends. I can win an argument on any topic, against any opponent. People know this and steer clear of me at parties. Often, as a sign of their great respect, they don't even invite me. You too can win arguments. Simply follow these rules:

Drink liquor.

Suppose you are at a party and some hotshot intellectual is expounding on the economy of Peru, a subject you know nothing about. If you're drinking some health-fanatic drink like grapefruit juice, you'll hang back, afraid to display your ignorance, while the hotshot enthralls your date. But if you drink several large martinis, you'll discover you have STRONG VIEWS about the Peruvian economy. You'll be a WEALTH of information. You'll argue forcefully, offering searing insights and possibly upsetting furniture. People will be impressed. Some may leave the room.

Make things up.

Suppose, in the Peruvian economy argument, you are trying to prove that Peruvians are underpaid, a position you base solely on the fact that YOU are underpaid, and you'll be damned if you're going to let a bunch of Peruvians be better off. DON'T say: "I think Peruvians are underpaid." Say instead: "The average Peruvian's salary in 1981 dollars adjusted for the revised tax base is $1,452.81 per annum, which is $836.07 before the mean gross poverty level."

NOTE: Always make up exact figures.

If an opponent asks you where you got your information, make THAT up too. Say: "This information comes from Dr. Hovel T. Moon's study for the Buford Commission published on May 9, 1982. Didn't you read it?" Say this in the same tone of voice you would use to say, "You left your soiled underwear in my bathroom."

Use meaningless but weighty-sounding words and phrases.

Memorize this list:

Let me put it this way

In terms of

Vis-a-vis

Per se

As it were

Qua

Ipso facto

Ergo

So to speak

You should also memorize some Latin abbreviations such as "Q.E.D.", "e.g.", and "i.e." These are all short for "I speak Latin, and you don't." Here's how to use these words and phrases. Suppose you want to say, "Peruvians would like to order appetizers more often, but they don't have enough money."

You never win arguments talking like that. But you WILL win if you say, "Let me put it this way. In terms of appetizers vis-a-vis Peruvians qua Peruvians, they would like to order them more often, so to speak, but they do not have enough money per se, as it were. Ergo, ipso facto, case closed. Q.E.D."

Only a fool would challenge that statement.

Use snappy and irrelevant comebacks.

You need an arsenal of all-purpose irrelevant phrases to fire back at your opponents when they make valid points. The best are:

You're begging the question.

You're being defensive.

Don't compare apples to oranges.

What are your parameters?

This last one is especially valuable. Nobody (other than engineers and policy wonks) has the vaguest idea what "parameters" means.

Don't forget the classic: YOU'RE SO LINEAR.

Here's how to use your comebacks:

You say: As Abraham Lincoln said in 1873...

Your opponent says: Lincoln died in 1865.

You say: You're begging the question.

You say: Liberians, like most Asians...

Your opponent says: Liberia is in Africa.

You say: You're being defensive.

You say: Since the discovery of the incandescent light bulb...

Your opponent says: The light bulb is an invention.

You say: Well DUH!

Compare your opponent to Adolf Hitler.

This is your heavy artillery, for when your opponent is obviously right and you are spectacularly wrong. Bring Hitler up subtly. Say, "That sounds suspiciously like something Adolf Hitler might say," or "You certainly do remind me of Adolf Hitler."

WORLD CUP 2010 FINALS!

With the WC Finals in like, less than two days away (!!), which camp are you on!

NETHERLANDS?

OR SPAIN?

Okay im super excited about the finals!! Anyway, if you all saw the front page of the ST this morning Paul the Octopus (who shall not be barbequed or grilled in any way) chose spain, while Mani the Bird from Serangoon chose netherlands. HMM.
I dont really have a favourite team cause they both are first timers so i guess they're both deserving of the title :D

Anyway, please remember to sleep early so we can watch the world cup and not feel like a zombie the next day. Then again, qouting bentang, since its P dialogue during PT first thing in the morning on monday, we can "sleep during HON-ologue on monday morning". (Not a good idea cause we're right smack in the middle but we can totally act like we're tired and dying...) Also, it'll be a good idea to bring some sweets to keep ourselves going for the day.

And i have a random idea!!

Okay to commemorate world cup finals, i am going to tie my hair with the colours of the team which won the finals for the entire week HAHAHAHA (yes random!!) but it'll be cool and you all (girls) can join me ^^ or just use colours of the team you support :D So its either orange/red,blue,white for netherlands, and red and yellow for spain :D

I AM BLOCKED

Hey people,

It's been a LOOONG while since anyone posted stuff here! And I've just come here to rant ^^

The blocks were just disastrous for me. I honestly think I won't be passing any of my papers T.T By passing I mean getting >50%, except for Math, that has to be >70%. And when I saw my Chem MCQ marks of 11/25, I know it was just all over. From then on, everything is going to be worse and worse. I can't even imagine my marks for Bio, Econs or GP, and Math is probably gonna be my biggest disappointment. I'm Economically screwed. There just doesn't seem to be any Chemistry between me and my work. I suspect that I'm Biologically wrong. In General all my Papers are screwed, for my brain seems to work Mathematically slower than others. You know, it just like an arithmetic progress of intelligence sequence, where it goes something like: zhunsong --> retards --> average student --> geniuses --> super geniuses --> theron, boyang and the like

Sigh... :( Ok, I should try to improve into a retard soon.

Anyway, just want to tell you people that the Toy Story 3 is a great movie! I haven't watched the movie yet, but I've read many reviews on it and it's another masterpiece form Pixar. I've loved almost every movie made by Pixar, such as The Incredibles, Wallie, Up and Finding Nemo, and I'm sure this movie won't disappoint. Oh, and I loved Toy Story 1 and 2 and have watched them multiple times, so this movie is like a closure of what is a great trilogy :) Btw, the whole movies of Toy Story 1 and 2 can be found on Youtube! =X (now you know how I waste my time away)
